About My Art

My art is based on the interplay between my Asian background and my experience with western aesthetics, as I was born in Korea, studied art there, and then moved to Washington state when I was 30 years old. I have had a dual artistic identity ever since.

These two cultural and technical roots have helped to form who I am as an artist and have shaped the way I see the world and communicate my ideas. In my art, I try to reflect my appreciation for nature by often taking natural objects and minimalizing their shapes or colors to emphasize the feelings they evoke or the various themes that I want to express. Through the use of simplified artistic elements, my aim is to symbolically represent moments when I’ve been inspired and touched. All the while, I do not want to limit the viewer’s own perspective, and I may avoid outlining the exact shape of an object to enable the limitless possibilities of interpretation by others.

I hope that my art can expand the imaginations of my viewers and stimulate them to want to seek more and dig deeper. To do this, I may give them a hint about my own thoughts, but I leave it up to them to develop their own.
